On an autumn evening in Clinton Township, Michigan, the life of 33-year-old Jordan Wheeler was tragically cut short in an act of domestic violence. On Thursday, October 19, 2023, Jordan, a devoted mother of three, was shot and killed in her home. She had called 911 to report that her husband, Steven Wheeler, was assaulting her. While on the phone with the dispatcher, she was shot multiple times.
The couple was in the process of a divorce, which Jordan had filed for two months prior to the incident. On the evening of her death, two of their young sons had called her, upset because their father was being mean to them. Jordan had gone to the house to pick them up. Shortly after she arrived, an argument escalated, leading to the fatal shooting. Just before the gunshots rang out, Jordan had ushered her children out of the house, telling them to run to a neighbor for safety.
Responding police officers found Jordan with multiple gunshot wounds. Her husband, Steven Wheeler, who was 30 years old at the time, was arrested at the scene. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and felony firearm possession. The evidence against him included the 911 call that captured the shooting.
Steven Wheeler's case went to trial, where his and Jordan's then 9-year-old son bravely testified against his father. He recounted the events of that night, describing his father's anger and the fear that led him and his younger brother to flee the house moments before their mother was killed. After a six-day trial in Macomb County Circuit Court, a jury convicted Steven Bryce Wheeler of first-degree premeditated murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
