In the Burton Heights neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Michigan, a story of simmering resentment and deadly retribution unfolded, culminating in the death of 32-year-old Darryl Yarber. Dominike Sterling, then 33, was charged with first-degree murder, accused of being the one who pulled the trigger. His alleged co-conspirator, 26-year-old Tyriq Bettison, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Investigators believe Bettison was with Yarber on the day of the shooting, allegedly providing updates on his location to Sterling and others involved in the plot. Police suspect a total of at least five people were involved in the premeditated murder. Among the alleged conspirators was Dominike's brother, Samuel Sterling, who was in the vehicle with his brother and Bettison at the time of the shooting. However, Samuel Sterling could not be charged as he was later killed in a separate incident involving a Michigan State Police detective.
The case against Dominike Sterling and Tyriq Bettison moved through the legal system, with a district judge determining in June 2025 that there was sufficient evidence for the two men to stand trial on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
