On a winter morning in February 2024, the life of 15-year-old male, Tyler Louis Johnson, was tragically cut short. On February 11th, inside a room at the Westin Hotel in Southfield, Michigan, what was supposed to be a sleepover among friends turned into a scene of violence. A gunshot rang out, and Tyler was struck in the head. He was rushed to a local hospital and placed on life support, but succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
In the immediate aftermath, police arrived to a
chaotic situation. Five teenagers, including Tyler, had been in the hotel room, a room that had been rented for them by one of the teen's uncles. As officers converged on the scene, two of the teens attempted to flee. They were detained near an elevator, and one of them, a 15-year-old, was found in possession of two handguns. A subsequent investigation confirmed that one of these weapons was the one used to fatally shoot Tyler Johnson. The weapon had been reported stolen out of Flint the previous year. A search of the hotel room uncovered a spent shell casing, marijuana, psychedelic mushrooms, and a scale.
Despite identifying the murder weapon and having the individual who possessed it in custody, the investigation into Tyler's death quickly hit a wall. The teen found with the guns was charged with carrying concealed weapons but was not charged in relation to the shooting and was eventually released. The primary obstacle for law enforcement has been the silence of the four other teenagers who were in the room when Tyler was shot. All four have retained lawyers and have refused to provide investigators with an account of what transpired.
This lack of cooperation has left the case in what Southfield Police Chief Elvin V. Barren has described as a 'stalled state.' While police possess physical and circumstantial evidence and have stated they have a strong idea of who pulled the trigger, they lack the crucial eyewitness testimony required by the prosecutor's office to file murder charges. The case remains open but unsolved, leaving a grieving family desperate for answers and justice. Tyler's mother has publicly voiced her frustration and pain, believing that the truth is being deliberately concealed.
