Trey Cameron Roberts, 23, was a young man from Southfield, Michigan, whose life was tragically cut short inside the home he shared with his family. Loved ones remember him as a person who should have been safest in his own house, surrounded by those he trusted.

The afternoon of Monday, October 19, 2026, turned into a scene of unimaginable horror on Dorset Avenue. Around 12:46 p.m., security footage from a nearby location captured the distinct and rapid sound of 17 gunshots. A short time later, surveillance video allegedly showed Trey’s younger brother, 21-year-old Breylon Roberts, leaving the back of the residence with a dog. Witnesses later told police this was unusual behavior for Breylon. He then allegedly returned to the home, got into his black Jeep Grand Cherokee, and drove to a relative's house, where family members said he acted strangely and took a shower.

Back at the Dorset Avenue home, the brothers’ 17-year-old sister arrived that afternoon to a disturbing scene. After finding blood and what she thought were bullets, she called 911 around 3 p.m. Southfield Police officers responded to the residence, located near Southfield Road, and discovered Trey Roberts in the kitchen. He had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Southfield Police Department launched an immediate investigation. Inside the home, detectives recovered 17 spent 9mm shell casings, matching the number of shots heard on the audio recording. Investigators obtained a search warrant for Breylon Roberts' Jeep, which was parked in the driveway. Underneath the driver's seat, they found a black 9mm privately manufactured firearm, often called a "ghost gun," with an empty magazine. Ballistics analysis later confirmed that the shell casings found at the crime scene matched the firearm recovered from the vehicle.

Breylon Roberts was taken into custody and subsequently charged by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office with first-degree premeditated murder and felony firearm. During a press conference, Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren said investigators were looking into a possible motive. He stated that family and friends had described an ongoing conflict between the brothers, allegedly stemming from Breylon's perception that Trey was more successful. Barren compared the tragic circumstances to the biblical story of Cain and Abel and urged families to seek help when domestic conflicts escalate.

“This is a heartbreaking case involving the loss of one brother at the hands of another,” Chief Barren said. “Our thoughts are with the family as they navigate this unimaginable tragedy. While no words can ease their pain, we remain committed to conducting thorough investigations and working closely with the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office to pursue justice and accountability.”

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald also commented on the profound loss. “Trey Cameron Roberts’ death is a tragedy, and our thoughts are with his loved ones,” McDonald stated. “Trey was killed in his home, the place he should’ve felt safest, allegedly by someone he should’ve felt safest with. This story is a tragic reminder that guns can lead to consequences that can never be undone.”

As of late October 2026, Breylon Roberts has been arraigned and is being held without bond. His next court date was scheduled for November 5, 2026. If convicted of first-degree premeditated murder, he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The felony firearm charge carries a mandatory two-year prison sentence. The case is proceeding through the court system.
