In Saginaw, Michigan, a 19-year-old Black man named Jason Lamar Porterfield Jr. was fatally wounded in a shooting on March 21, 2024. The incident occurred at the Birch Park Apartments. Porterfield was shot in the head and succumbed to his injuries two days later, on March 23, 2024.
Following his death, Porterfield's family, including his stepfather Dominique Alexander, publicly called for action from Saginaw's city leaders to address the ongoing violence at the Birch Park Apartments. The family advocated for the closure of the complex, citing a history of violent incidents and inadequate security. His stepfather, a minister and civil rights activist from Texas, highlighted the danger and lack of safety measures at the complex.
In September 2024, an arrest was made in connection with Porterfield's death. Authorities took 17-year-old Malik Cannon into custody. Cannon is accused of firing 24 shots, one of which struck Porterfield. An arrest warrant for Cannon had been issued in April, and he was apprehended several months later. He is being charged as an adult in the case. Porterfield's family expressed the pain of their loss upon learning of the arrest of another young person. Despite the arrest, his stepfather reiterated his belief that more needs to be done to ensure the safety of the residents at the Birch Park complex.
