In the early morning hours of February 28, 2023, the life of 29-year-old Adam White, a male educator of special needs children, was tragically cut short in Baltimore, Maryland. His body was discovered by Southern District patrol officers around 6:04 a.m. in the 4100 block of Duane Avenue, where he was found lying on the ground, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his back. Paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene.

The investigation into White's death led Baltimore Police Department homicide detectives to identify a suspect. On May 25, 2023, members of the Warrant Apprehension Task Force arrested 22-year-old Darius Joyner at a residence in the 2000 block of Clifton Avenue. Authorities charged Joyner with first-degree murder and various handgun violations in connection with White's killing.

The case against Darius Joyner proceeded to trial in Baltimore City Circuit Court. During the proceedings, prosecutors alleged that the motive for the murder was revenge. They claimed that Joyner's ex-girlfriend had been sexually assaulted by White at their workplace in May 2022. According to the prosecution, after White sent the ex-girlfriend a Facebook friend request in February 2023, Joyner began to plan the murder, manipulating his ex-girlfriend into arranging a meeting with White at a park on Duane Avenue. It was there that two assailants, one armed with a 9mm handgun and the other with a 12-gauge shotgun, ambushed and killed White.

The defense, however, painted a different picture for the jury. Joyner's attorney argued that it was the ex-girlfriend, who had been granted full immunity from prosecution, who was the 'puppet-master' and had orchestrated Adam White's death out of a desire for revenge. The defense contended that there was no physical evidence, such as firearm evidence or independent witnesses, to connect Joyner to the crime. They highlighted over 60 points of reasonable doubt during closing arguments.

On May 13, 2024, the jury delivered its verdict. Darius Joyner was found not guilty of first-degree murder, as well as three other related charges: firearm use in a felony violent crime, conspiracy to use a firearm in a felony violent crime, and having a handgun on his person. Following the acquittal, the case of Adam White's murder remains without a conviction.
