In the quiet community of Takoma Park, Maryland, 20-year-old Walter Woods III was known as a gentle and quiet soul, the cherished only child of his loving parents. His life, full of hopes and dreams, was tragically cut short on the evening of March 7, 2023. On that day, in the 1700 block of Hampshire Green Lane in nearby Silver Spring, Woods was found unresponsive in a playground area, suffering from four gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of first responders and medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The investigation into the death of the young man, described by friends and family as having a determined spirit, quickly became a homicide case for the Montgomery County Department of Police. Their efforts led to the identification of two suspects: 21-year-old Javier Reyes of Silver Spring and 20-year-old Brian Gaitan-Sanchez of Bladensburg. Just two weeks after the fatal shooting, on March 21, 2023, both men were arrested and charged with first-degree murder. They were taken into custody after search and seizure warrants were executed at their residences and were subsequently held without bond.
Further investigation revealed that Woods had arranged to meet Reyes and Gaitan-Sanchez at the neighborhood park to conduct a drug deal. Prior to the murder, Maryland State Police had been investigating Reyes for controlled substance distribution and had recorded him on video selling drugs and discussing the sale of a. 380 caliber handgun. Authorities believe this was the weapon used to kill Woods, a belief supported by a social media photo Reyes had posted of himself holding the firearm, with an identifying tattoo visible.
In December 2024, a jury found Javier Reyes guilty of second-degree felony murder and use of a handgun in a crime of violence for his role in Walter Woods' death. On February 18, 2025, Reyes was sentenced to up to 60 years in prison for his crimes, bringing a measure of justice to the family and friends who mourned the senseless loss of a young life. A GoFundMe campaign was established to help his grieving family with funeral expenses, and a memorial service was held to honor the memory of a young man taken too soon.
