On the evening of May 4, 2023, tragedy struck in the Upton neighborhood of Baltimore when Douglas Bates, a 51-year-old Black male, was shot. The incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. in the 600 block of West Lafayette Avenue. First responders arrived at the scene to find Bates and an unidentified woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
