On the evening of May 4, 2023, tragedy struck in the Upton neighborhood of Baltimore when Douglas Bates, a 51-year-old Black male, was shot. The incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. in the 600 block of West Lafayette Avenue. First responders arrived at the scene to find Bates and an unidentified woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Despite medical efforts, Douglas Bates succumbed to his injuries two days later, on May 6,
2023. The Baltimore Police Department's homicide detectives launched an investigation into the double shooting. In the immediate aftermath, authorities reported that they had not yet identified a motive or any suspects in the attack that claimed Bates's life and left another woman fighting for hers.
In an effort to generate leads, Metro Crime Stoppers announced an $8,000 reward for any information that would lead to an arrest in the case. The investigation into the death of Douglas Bates remains ongoing, and authorities have continued to appeal to the public for assistance. No arrests or suspects have been publicly announced in connection with the shooting.
