On the evening of May 24, 2023, a violent altercation in the 3200 block of Shannon Drive in Baltimore, Maryland, ended in the tragic death of 31-year-old Biancha Johnson, a female resident of the city. The incident, which occurred at approximately 7:12 p.m., stemmed from a physical dispute involving a group of individuals. During the course of the melee, a man produced a firearm and fired into the crowd, striking Johnson.
She was privately transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead by medical staff shortly after her arrival.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officers who had been called to the hospital to investigate the aggravated assault quickly pieced together the events that led to Johnson's death. Their preliminary investigation pointed to a chaotic scene where a personal dispute had escalated to deadly violence. The shooter was identified as 21-year-old Desron Barber, also of Baltimore. Barber was taken into custody at the scene of the crime on the same evening.
The day following the incident, May 25, 2023, the Baltimore Police Department formally charged Desron Barber with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Biancha Johnson. In addition to the murder charge, Barber also faced accusations of second-degree assault, use of a firearm in a felony violent crime, having a deadly weapon with intent to injure, and four counts of reckless endangerment.
Following his arrest and charging, Desron Barber entered the judicial system to face the allegations against him. The legal proceedings experienced some delays, with a scheduled jury trial being postponed. A new trial date was subsequently set for June 27, 2024, as the case against him for the death of Biancha Johnson continues to move through the court system.
