In the summer of 2023, a single act of violence cut short the life of 38-year-old Frissel Townes, Jr., a Black male from Baltimore, Maryland. On the evening of June 28th, just before 9 p.m., Townes was in the 2600 block of West Patapsco Avenue, helping a female acquaintance with her DoorDash deliveries. It was there that his life came to an abrupt and violent end when he was shot. When police arrived at the scene, they found Townes suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite any medical intervention, his death was later ruled a homicide.
The investigation into the murder of Frissel Townes led authorities to 37-year-old Tayvon Miller. Prosecutors laid out a case that painted a picture of a premeditated and brutal crime. They presented evidence suggesting that Miller had been in contact with the woman Townes was assisting both before and after the fatal shooting. While incarcerated, Miller continued to communicate with her, unaware that she was cooperating with the Baltimore Police Department's investigation. Witnesses reported seeing Miller remove Townes' backpack after the shooting and throw it into his car.
In March 2024, Tayvon Miller's trial began, with prosecutors charging him with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and firearm offenses. Though there were no direct eyewitnesses to the shooting itself, the prosecution built a case around cell phone records and the testimony of the woman Townes was with. In September 2024, a Baltimore City Circuit Court judge sentenced Miller to life in prison for the murder of Frissel Townes, Jr., with an additional 55 years for armed robbery and firearm convictions. During the sentencing, a letter from Townes' family was read aloud, expressing their profound grief and the sense of security they felt knowing the man responsible for their loved one's death would be behind bars.
