In the Ellwood Park neighborhood of Baltimore, a tragic event unfolded on the morning of September 23, 2023. Davon Jones, a 36-year-old male, was fatally shot in a violent altercation that also left another man wounded. The incident occurred around 10:46 a.m. in the 400 block of North Curley Street, where police responded to reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Jones and another 38-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite immediate medical attention, Davon Jones was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide led by Baltimore Police Department detectives swiftly identified a suspect. Just three days after the shooting, on September 26, 2023, authorities arrested 38-year-old Jamel McClurkin of Baltimore. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Davon Jones. Homicide investigators learned that McClurkin had shot and killed Jones during the incident on North Curley Street.
Further details of the crime came to light during legal proceedings. Home surveillance footage captured the fatal encounter, revealing that a physical altercation had occurred between Jones, McClurkin, and an unidentified third man. The video showed the unidentified individual shooting Jones multiple times in the chest before McClurkin delivered a final, fatal shot to the head. In court, it was revealed that McClurkin had a history of schizophrenia and was not on his prescribed medication at the time of the murder. Jamel McClurkin ultimately pleaded guilty to first-degree murder as part of a plea agreement. He received a sentence of life in prison, with all but 45 years suspended, to be followed by five years of supervised probation. He was also given a concurrent 20-year sentence for a firearm offense.
