In the early evening of March 6, 2024, violence shattered the quiet of a Northeast Baltimore neighborhood, leaving a young father dead just weeks before his thirtieth birthday. Denzel Brown, a 29-year-old male, was discovered by police responding to a shooting call at approximately 5:45 p.m. in the 4000 block of Loch Raven Boulevard. He was suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene and quickly transported Brown to a local hospital.
Despite the urgent efforts of medical staff to save him, his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced deceased. The initial investigation at the scene was tense, as officers were informed that a possible suspect had fled into a nearby residence. This prompted the deployment of a SWAT team, which made entry into the home, but the location was cleared without finding any suspects or additional victims.
The investigation into Denzel Brown's death continued, and on March 25, 2024, members of the Warrant Apprehension Task Force located and arrested a suspect without incident at a home in the 8000 block of Greenspring Way. The suspect was identified as 23-year-old Niyiraha Berry of Baltimore. Following her arrest, Berry was transported to the Central Booking Intake Facility.
Investigators learned that Berry had allegedly fatally shot Denzel Brown. Subsequently, she was formally charged with first-degree murder. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly released by authorities. In the wake of his death, loved ones remembered Brown as a devoted father with a 'huge heart' who left a lasting impression on everyone he met. A GoFundMe campaign was established to assist his family with funeral expenses, with any additional funds intended for his children.
