In the afternoon hours of a late November day in Baltimore, tragedy struck in a Southwest Baltimore alleyway, forever altering the lives of a local family. On November 29, 2022, Theodore Barksdale, a 34-year-old man, was found shot in an alley off the 100 block of North Kossuth Street. The call came in at approximately 4:20 p.m., and medics arrived swiftly to transport Barksdale to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Despite the urgent medical attention, his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The Baltimore Police Department's homicide detectives immediately took charge of the investigation. Their work involved a meticulous review of video footage from the area and interviews with several potential witnesses. Through their diligent efforts, investigators were able to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. This led them to obtain an arrest warrant for 18-year-old Dominique Edmonds.
On the morning of December 9, 2022, at around 9:10 a.m., members of the Warrant Task Force located and arrested Edmonds at an apartment in the 2000 block of Ramblewood Road in Northeast Baltimore. A search of the apartment uncovered a 'ghost gun' and suspected narcotics, which were collected as evidence in the case.
Following his arrest, Dominique Edmonds was taken to the Homicide Section for questioning before being transported to Central Booking. He was formally charged with first-degree murder, as well as various handgun and narcotics violations. Initially held without bail, the case against Edmonds proceeded through the legal system. In a subsequent court appearance, Edmonds accepted a plea deal, which reduced the first-degree murder charge to second-degree murder. He also pleaded guilty to the use of a firearm in a felony violent crime. The court sentenced Edmonds to serve 40 years, with all but 20 years suspended, to be followed by five years of supervised probation. For the firearm charge, he received a concurrent sentence of 20 years, with the first five years to be served without the possibility of parole. During the sentencing, Barksdale's older sister delivered a tearful victim impact statement, expressing the profound loss her family has endured.
