In the afternoon hours of a Tuesday in March, tragedy struck in Baltimore. On March 12, 2024, Justice Smallwood, a 33-year-old Black man, became a victim of fatal gun violence. The incident unfolded at approximately 4:46 p.m. at the intersection of East Baltimore Street and South Chester Street. When police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered evidence of a shooting.
Smallwood had already been transported to a local hospital by the time law enforcement was on site.
At the hospital, medical personnel attended to Smallwood, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite their life-saving efforts, his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced deceased.
The Baltimore Police Department's Homicide detectives have taken charge of the ongoing investigation into Smallwood's death.
