In the late hours of an April night in Baltimore, the life of 23-year-old Montez Barrett was tragically cut short. On April 24, 2024, at approximately 11:56 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting in the 1200 block of McCulloh Street. There, they discovered Montez Barrett, a Black male, inside a crashed black SUV, having sustained two fatal gunshot wounds to the back of his head. Medics arrived at the scene but were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead at the location.

The investigation into the homicide led police to identify 29-year-old Maurice Jones as a suspect. An individual who claimed to be driving the vehicle at the time of the incident came forward and informed detectives that three people were in the car: himself, Barrett, and a man he knew as 'Man Man,' who was later identified as Jones. According to the driver's initial statement, after driving around for some time, Jones allegedly shot at both Barrett and the driver. Following the shooting, both Jones and the driver reportedly fled the vehicle in opposite directions. Jones was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony violent crime, and several handgun possession charges.

Maurice Jones's trial began in July 2025. During the proceedings, the driver of the car, a key witness for the prosecution, recanted his initial statement to the police, claiming he was 'discombobulated' and could not remember the events of that night. He had initially identified Jones as the shooter but changed his testimony on the stand. Furthermore, a forensic scientist from the Baltimore Police Department testified that none of the fingerprints recovered from the crime scene were a match to Jones. On July 11, 2025, the jury found Maurice Jones not guilty of first-degree murder and other related charges. No verdict was reached on several other handgun-related charges.
