In the early evening hours of January 3, 2026, the life of James Bushrod, a 55-year-old Black man, was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting that marked Baltimore's first homicide of the new year. The incident unfolded around 5:33 p.m. in the 700 block of North Patterson Park Avenue, a neighborhood just blocks from the Northeast Market. When Southeast District officers arrived at the scene, they found Mr.
Bushrod suffering from a gunshot wound.
First responders at the scene immediately began rendering aid to Mr. Bushrod before he was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced deceased at the hospital. A neighbor reported that the victim was discovered in an alley near East Madison Street.
