In the winter of 2023, the life of 16-year-old Deonta 'Dink' Dorsey was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. On January 4th, the male sophomore from Edmondson-Westside High School was with a group of friends during their lunch break at the Edmondson Village Shopping Center in Baltimore, Maryland. The students were gathered outside a Popeyes restaurant, a popular hangout across the street from their school, when violence erupted.
Two individuals opened fire on the group of students, striking five of them. Deonta suffered multiple gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Four other students, two 17-year-olds and two 18-year-olds, were also wounded in the attack but survived.
The brazen daylight shooting sent shockwaves through the community and left Deonta's family heartbroken and searching for answers. Described as a quiet child who kept to himself, his family remembered him as a good boy who was not involved in any trouble. In the aftermath of the tragedy, his family, represented by an attorney, publicly decried the shopping center as a known epicenter of violence and an open-air drug market.
The Baltimore Police Department launched an investigation that led to the identification of two suspects, who were also teenagers at the time of the shooting. In February 2023, police arrested a 16-year-old in connection with the mass shooting and charged him with first-degree murder. A second suspect was also taken into custody. The two teenagers identified as the alleged shooters were Daaon Spears and Bryan Johnson, both 16 at the time of the incident. Spears was eventually charged with 31 counts, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and assault. Johnson faced 30 charges, which also included first-degree murder and attempted murder.
The legal process for the two accused teenagers has been lengthy. In October 2024, Daaon Spears stood trial, but the proceedings ended in a mistrial after the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict. In December of that same year, Bryan Johnson was offered a plea deal of 50 years in prison, which he rejected. Following the mistrial and the rejected plea deal, it was determined that Spears and Johnson would be tried together. Their joint trial was scheduled to begin in the spring of 2025. The case, which highlighted the persistent issue of youth violence in the city, continues to work its way through the justice system.
