In the quiet suburb of Elkridge, Maryland, a tragic and violent event shattered the peace of a local family. Syeda Fatima, a 25-year-old woman, was killed in a domestic incident that also claimed the lives of two other family members. The horrific events unfolded on the evening of May 30, 2024, inside a home in the 6900 block of Norwood Ferry.
Neighbors reported hearing gunshots and multiple calls were made to 911.
Howard County police who responded to the scene discovered a heartbreaking sight. Inside the residence, they found Syeda Fatima, her mother, 57-year-old Syeda Aalia Nayyar, and her sister-in-law, 33-year-old Alizey Fatima, all deceased from gunshot wounds. Syeda's brother, 31-year-old Muhammad Ali Hamza, was also found with critical injuries and was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. A three-month-old infant, the daughter of Muhammad Ali Hamza and Alizey Fatima, was discovered unharmed in the home.
The investigation quickly identified the perpetrator as Syeda Fatima's father, 61-year-old Nayyar Abbas Syed. In a chilling turn of events, authorities revealed that Nayyar Abbas Syed himself had contacted 911, admitting to shooting his family members and stating his intention to take his own life. The suspect did not reside at the Elkridge home with the rest of his family. He was found at the scene with a critical gunshot wound and was taken to St. Agnes hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The motive for the devastating murder-suicide remains under investigation, as police delve into cellphone records and text messages for clues. There were no signs of forced entry into the home, and authorities had no prior record of domestic-related calls to the residence. The incident was described by police as an isolated and tragic domestic shooting. The community was left in shock by the loss of three women and the profound impact on the surviving family members.
