In a quiet Elkridge, Maryland, neighborhood, the evening of May 30, 2024, was shattered by the sounds of gunfire, leading to a tragic loss of life within a single family. Among the victims was Alizey Fatima, a 33-year-old woman, who was fatally shot in what police have described as a murder-suicide. The incident, which unfolded in a home in the 6900 block of Norwood Ferry, also claimed the lives of two other women.
That night, neighbors made multiple 911 calls after hearing gunshots just
before 10 p.m. Howard County police who arrived at the scene discovered a horrific scene. Inside the home, they found Alizey Fatima, her 25-year-old sister-in-law, Syeda Fatima, and her 57-year-old mother-in-law, Syeda Aalia Nayyar, all deceased from gunshot wounds.
The perpetrator was identified as 61-year-old Nayyer Abbas Syed, Alizey's father-in-law. After shooting the three women and his 31-year-old son, Muhammad Ali Hamza, Syed turned the gun on himself. Syed died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His son was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in critical condition. Miraculously, a three-month-old infant, Alizey's child, was found unharmed inside the home and was placed in the care of a family member after a wellness check at a local hospital.
Law enforcement officials have stated that the investigation points to a domestic dispute as the motive behind the tragic event. There were no signs of forced entry into the residence, and authorities have indicated there were no prior calls for police to the home. As the suspect is deceased, there will be no arrests or trial in this case. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to understand the circumstances that led to this devastating outcome.
