In the quiet suburban neighborhood of Elkridge, Maryland, a tragic event unfolded on the evening of May 30, 2024, forever altering the lives of a family. Syeda Aalia Nayyar, a 57-year-old woman, was killed in a violent attack that also claimed the lives of two other family members. The incident, which took place in the 6900 block of Norwood Ferry, sent shockwaves through the community as details of the horrific murder-suicide emerged.
That evening, just before 10 p.m., Howard County
police were inundated with 911 calls from concerned neighbors who reported hearing gunshots. Concurrently, a chilling call came into the dispatch center from the perpetrator himself, 61-year-old Nayyar Abbas Syed, who confessed to shooting his family and stated his intention to take his own life. When officers arrived at the residence, they discovered a devastating scene. Syeda Aalia Nayyar, her 25-year-old daughter, Syeda Fatima, and her 33-year-old daughter-in-law, Alizey Fatima, were all found deceased inside the home.
The suspect, Nayyar Abbas Syed, who was Syeda Aalia Nayyar's husband but did not reside at the home, was found critically injured. He was transported to St. Agnes Hospital, where he was pronounced dead overnight. The couple's 31-year-old son, Muhammad Ali Hamza, was also found with life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Miraculously, a three-month-old infant, the suspect's granddaughter, was discovered unharmed inside the house. She was taken to a hospital for a wellness check and subsequently placed in the care of a family member.
Investigators determined that there were no signs of forced entry into the home, suggesting that the shooter had access to the residence. The motive behind the tragic act remains under investigation.
