In the early hours of a summer morning in Baltimore, tragedy struck on North Potomac Street, forever altering the lives of those connected to Reginald Coffey. A 32-year-old Black male, Coffey was found by police inside a home on the 600 block of the street at approximately 1:16 a.m. on July 24, 2024, suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics arrived at the scene and quickly transported him to a local hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Reginald Coffey succumbed to his injuries four days later, on July 28, 2024.
The investigation into the shooting led Baltimore Police to identify a suspect in the case. Joseph Henry Morton, III, a 37-year-old man, was arrested and charged in connection with Coffey's death. The charges brought against Morton included second-degree murder, firearm use, illegal possession of a firearm, and having a loaded handgun on his person.
Following Morton's arrest, the case proceeded through the legal system. On January 24, 2025, a trial date was scheduled during a hearing before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland. The trial is set to begin on May 6 before Judge Jeannie J. Hong and is expected to last for four days. Joseph Henry Morton, III, will be represented by defense attorney Brandon Thornton.
