On a late summer evening in Baltimore, tragedy began to unfold for Melvin Rich III, a 36-year-old Black male dedicated to curbing violence in his community. On August 10, 2024, in the 1300 block of North Carey Street, Rich was shot. An employee of the Sandtown Safe Streets program, he worked as a violence interrupter, ironically falling victim to the very type of violence he was committed to preventing. At the time of the shooting, he was off-duty.
