On the evening of February 20, 2024, a Shot Spotter alert drew Baltimore police to the 800 block of West Lexington Street around 11:34 p.m. Inside a home, they discovered 19-year-old Darcell Terrell Mitchell suffering from gunshot wounds. Investigators later determined that Mitchell had been shot while standing outside before he ran into the residence for cover.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting death of the male teenager led authorities to identify three suspects. On February 28, 2024, members of the Warrant Apprehension Task Force arrested 18-year-old Davon Butler, 19-year-old Charles Bowen, and an unnamed 17-year-old male in connection with the homicide. All three individuals were taken to the Central Booking Intake Facility and subsequently charged with first-degree murder.
The legal process moved forward for two of the accused, Charles Bowen and Davon Butler. In a trial that brought the motive for the senseless violence to light, it was revealed that Mitchell, who was believed to be an old friend of the defendants, was killed after he refused to give them $50. On April 8, 2025, a jury found both Bowen and Butler guilty on all charges. Bowen was convicted of first-degree murder, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and the use of a firearm in a felony or violent crime. Butler was found guilty of the same offenses, with additional convictions for having a handgun on his person, possession of a firearm or ammunition as a minor, and having a loaded handgun on his person. Both men awaited sentencing following their convictions.
