On a warm summer evening, what began as a night out with friends ended in tragedy for 16-year-old Carlos Segura III of Sandy Spring, Maryland. The young man, who was about to enter his third year at Springbrook High School with aspirations of becoming a mechanic, was fatally shot on Saturday, August 10, 2024. Just hours before the incident, he had informed his mother he was going out with friends.
The shooting occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m.
in the 1900 block of Lebanon Street in the Langley Park area of Hyattsville. When Prince George's County police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered evidence of a shooting but found no victim. A short time later, authorities were notified that a teenager with gunshot wounds had been brought to a local hospital. That teenager was identified as Carlos Segura III, who succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. His mother later learned that he had been shot while inside a car.
In the wake of the shooting, the Prince George's County Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. As of the latest reports, detectives are still working to determine a motive for the shooting and to identify any suspects involved. No arrests have been made in connection with the case. Authorities have offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and indictment of the person or persons responsible for Carlos Segura III's death. His mother, choosing to remain anonymous for safety concerns, remembered her son as a smiling, happy kid who was 'full of life, with a lot of love, passion, dedication to his family, to his friends.' The investigation remains ongoing as his family and community await answers.
