In the late evening of August 31, 2024, a dispute in a parking lot in Landover, Maryland, turned fatal, ending the life of 34-year-old Jakel Stone of Bowie. Responding to reports of a shooting at approximately 7:40 p.m. in the 6900 block of Hawthorne Street, Prince George's County Police officers discovered Stone suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he succumbed to them a short time later.
The Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. Their preliminary findings suggested that the shooting stemmed from a dispute between Stone and another individual. This initial investigation led them to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting.
A few days later, on September 4, 2024, authorities announced a significant development in the case. The department's Fugitive Unit, with assistance from the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, located and apprehended 23-year-old Lawrence Fox Jr. of Hyattsville in Washington, D.C. Fox was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and other related charges in connection with Jakel Stone's death. Following his arrest, Fox was held in custody in Washington, D.C., awaiting extradition to Prince George's County to face the charges against him. The motive for the dispute that led to the deadly encounter has not been publicly disclosed by authorities.
