In the winter of 2023, the life of Paul Rhoads, a 56-year-old Caucasian male, was cut short in a fatal shooting on January 22nd in Appleton, Wisconsin. Rhoads was discovered bleeding in the middle of Briarcliff Drive. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. The Appleton Police Department swiftly launched an investigation into what they determined to be a homicide.
The investigation led authorities to identify a person of interest, 37-year-old Yia Lor.
A few weeks after the shooting, Lor was hospitalized following a police chase in Sheboygan. Subsequently, an arrest warrant was issued, and charges were filed against him for the murder of Rhoads. According to the criminal complaint, a witness revealed that Rhoads had arranged a drug deal with Lor. The situation escalated, and Lor shot Rhoads shortly after arriving in Appleton.
In March 2023, Yia Lor was formally charged with first-degree intentional homicide. A judge set a $2 million cash bond. Due to medical conditions, Lor's transfer to the Outagamie County Jail was delayed, and he was initially held by the Department of Corrections on a probation violation from a previous charge. By July 2023, a court found sufficient evidence for Lor to stand trial for Rhoads' murder.
Yia Lor's trial took place, and in August 2024, a jury convicted him on five counts, including first-degree intentional homicide, for the death of Paul Rhoads. The conviction brought a legal conclusion to the case, establishing Lor as the individual responsible for the shooting that ended Rhoads' life during the drug-related encounter. A sentencing date was scheduled to follow the conviction.
