On the morning of May 3, 2023, Michael Paul Schraven, a 40-year-old Caucasian male, was driving in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with his wife when their vehicle was fired upon. The shooting occurred around 8:58 a.m. on the on-ramp to I-45 southbound at Silver Spring Drive. The shots, believed to have come from another vehicle, struck Schraven. His wife, who was in the passenger seat, was not physically harmed.
Following the shooting, Schraven's vehicle came to a stop on the off-ramp of I-45
near 76th Street. Witnesses at the scene described a harrowing situation, with one person recounting that the windows of Schraven's vehicle were shot out. The woman in the car with Schraven, identified as his wife, was described as being severely shaken and told a witness that the incident was the result of road rage. Authorities, however, have only characterized it as a "vehicle to vehicle incident" and have not officially confirmed a motive.
A number of Good Samaritans rushed to aid Schraven, including a nurse who performed CPR in an attempt to save his life. Despite these efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office responded to calls about the shooting shortly after 9 a.m. and began an investigation into the homicide. At the time of the initial reports, the suspect or suspects remained at large, and a detailed description of their vehicle was not immediately available.
Michael Schraven was a mechanic from Milwaukee who had attended West Allis Central. He was a father and was remembered by loved ones as a man with many talents who enjoyed building computers and fixing cars. He was known for his willingness to help family and friends. No arrests have been publicly announced in connection with his death.
