On the night of May 18, 2023, 25-year-old Kevin Cross Jr., a Black / African American male, was fatally shot in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of 50th and Hampton. Cross was inside his car with another person when they were approached by unknown individuals. The men opened the car doors and began shooting. Cross was struck and pronounced dead at the scene, found lying outside the driver's door.
Another man, a 28-year-old, was also shot but survived his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting led Milwaukee police to three suspects. According to the criminal complaint, the motive for the attack was a planned armed robbery. One of the men, Antonio Carr, had allegedly orchestrated the plan to rob Cross of money and his pit bull. Carr was reportedly in the car with Cross at the time of the shooting and was in communication with the other assailants, texting them the location where Cross had parked. Investigators found ten bullet casings at the scene.
Three men were ultimately arrested and charged in connection with the murder of Kevin Cross Jr. Antonio Carr and Zavionn Terrell were charged shortly after the homicide. A third suspect, 29-year-old Jevon Simmons, was charged nearly two years later, in April 2025, after he admitted his involvement to police while being arrested for an unrelated matter. Forensic evidence, including fingerprints found on the car and GPS monitoring data for Terrell, placed the suspects at the crime scene. Guns recovered from a home where Carr was arrested the day after the shooting matched the casings found at the scene.
The legal process has resulted in convictions for two of the men involved. Zavionn Terrell, 25, pleaded guilty to felony murder and in July 2025 was sentenced to 21 years in prison followed by 12 years of extended supervision. Antonio Carr also pleaded guilty to felony murder and was sentenced to 18 years in prison and seven years of extended supervision. The case against the third man, Jevon Simmons, is ongoing; he has pleaded not guilty and was scheduled for a plea hearing in October 2025.
