In a tragic turn of events on a June evening, one-year-old Zy'aire Nevels, a Black female, lost her life in a senseless act of violence in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On June 3, 2023, what began as a dispute between adults escalated into a fatal shooting that cut short a life that had barely begun. The young girl was a passenger in her parents' car, accompanied by her three-year-old sibling, when the incident unfolded.
The evening took a terrifying turn when a vehicle began pursuing the family's car. The driver of the pursuing car was identified as Davon Chapman, the husband of Zy'aire's mother's best friend. According to the criminal complaint, Chapman chased the family through red lights, creating a perilous situation on the city streets. In the vicinity of 19th and Atkinson, Chapman opened fire on the family's vehicle. While Zy'aire's parents, Zhane Brown and Montrell Nevels, were not physically harmed by the gunfire, a bullet struck their young daughter who was secured in the backseat.
In a desperate attempt to save his daughter's life, Montrell Nevels drove to a nearby fire station. From there, Zy'aire was rushed to a hospital, but tragically, her injuries proved to be fatal, and she died that night. The incident was the culmination of a fight between adults, with devastating consequences for an innocent child.
Following the shooting, authorities launched an investigation that quickly led them to Davon Chapman. He was arrested a day after the shooting following a traffic stop on Interstate 94 in Kenosha. Chapman was subsequently charged with first-degree intentional homicide and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. In February 2024, a jury found him guilty on both counts. The conviction for first-degree intentional homicide carries a mandatory life sentence.
