Astrid Nicole Gonzalez Feliciano, a 30-year-old Hispanic/Latina woman originally from Peñuelas, Puerto Rico, was fatally shot on May 5, 2025, at a residence on Milwaukee’s south side, near South 17th Street and West Burnham Street. Feliciano had been living in the Milwaukee area for several years and was the mother of two young children. What initially appeared to police as an unexplained shooting developed into a homicide investigation centered on a personal relationship and an alleged
effort to draw Feliciano’s boyfriend away from the residence before the gunfire.
On the evening of May 5, Milwaukee’s ShotSpotter system detected what sounded like four gunshots in the area. Officers responded but were unable to locate a shooting victim or an obvious crime scene at the time. Feliciano remained inside the residence until the following day, when several 911 calls brought police back to the area after concerns were raised about someone needing medical attention. When officers arrived, a young child came out of the home holding four fired. 45-caliber cartridge casings. Police entered and discovered Feliciano unresponsive on the floor behind the front door. A second child was also found inside the residence. An autopsy later determined that Feliciano had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators soon focused on Janice Ramos, who had a child with Feliciano’s boyfriend. According to the criminal complaint, Feliciano and the boyfriend had been together for nearly three years, and Feliciano and Ramos were aware of one another. The boyfriend told investigators that he had planned to stay at Feliciano’s residence that night, but Ramos began sending him messages and calling him to say their daughter was sick. He left Feliciano’s home and returned to his own residence, where he waited approximately 30 to 45 minutes for Ramos. Ramos then called and claimed she had been stopped by police. The boyfriend later told investigators that the situation seemed suspicious because he could not hear their daughter, a running vehicle, or traffic during the call, and when Ramos finally arrived, their daughter appeared to be fine.
Surveillance footage became an important part of the investigation. According to the complaint, a dark blue Toyota Matrix arrived in the neighborhood and two people got out. The pair were recorded waiting until Feliciano’s boyfriend had left before approaching the residence. Moments later, gunshots could be heard. Investigators identified Ramos as the owner of the Toyota Matrix and subsequently took her into custody. Authorities alleged that the supposed emergency involving her daughter had been used to lure the boyfriend away from Feliciano’s home before the shooting.
Ramos initially denied being present when Feliciano was killed, but investigators said she later admitted that she had gone to the residence. According to the criminal complaint, Ramos maintained that she only intended to speak with Feliciano and claimed that a friend she identified as “Yari” was the person who actually fired the shots. Contemporary reports said investigators had not publicly identified or charged that alleged second participant at that stage of the case. Ramos, however, was charged with first-degree intentional homicide as a party to a crime, with use of a dangerous weapon. Her bond was reported as $100,000.
The case eventually ended with a guilty plea rather than a homicide trial. Ramos pleaded guilty in connection with Feliciano’s killing, with later reporting identifying the conviction as first-degree reckless homicide following a plea agreement. On September 11, 2026, a Milwaukee judge sentenced Ramos to 17 years in prison followed by eight years of extended supervision, bringing the total sentence to 25 years under state supervision. The sentencing came more than a year after Feliciano was killed and concluded the prosecution of the person authorities had charged in connection with the shooting.
