On a summer evening in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the life of 33-year-old Hispanic man, Orlando Rodriguez-Rivera, was tragically cut short. On July 13, 2023, near the intersection of 23rd and Burnham on the city's south side, a violent encounter unfolded that would leave one man dead and a community searching for answers. Responding to a call about a shooting, police officers arrived to find Rodriguez-Rivera lying face down on the steps of a porch, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The incident also left a 27-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her arm. Investigators began to piece together the events of that evening, recovering seven fired cartridge casings from the area. Their investigation was aided by security camera footage from several locations, which captured a clear image of the suspect. The video showed a man, later identified as 25-year-old Christopher Cruz-Gonzalez, approaching Rodriguez-Rivera. After a brief interaction, the suspect drew a firearm and fired in the direction of Rodriguez-Rivera and two other people, one of whom was a two-year-old child.
Shortly after the shooting, police detained Cruz-Gonzalez near the scene. During questioning by detectives, he admitted to being the shooter depicted in the security footage. He acknowledged that he shot and killed Orlando Rodriguez-Rivera, injured the woman, and fired multiple times in the direction of the young child.
Following his confession, Christopher Cruz-Gonzalez was charged with first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless injury, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He made his initial court appearance on July 18, 2023, where a cash bond was set at $150,000 as the legal process against him began.
