In the early hours of a cold Saturday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the life of 28-year-old Kuvina Vee Hickles was tragically cut short. On February 10, 2024, Kuvina, a Black/African American woman, was fatally shot in the Hampton Heights neighborhood, near 48th and Fairmount. At the time of her death, she was six weeks pregnant with her first child, a baby she and her mother were eagerly anticipating.
The devastating event unfolded around 1:30 a.m.
when police responded to a call of shots fired. Upon arrival, they discovered Kuvina suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite any efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The loss was not only of a young woman with a vibrant personality, but also of a new life that was just beginning. Her family expressed profound grief over the loss of both Kuvina and her unborn child, with her mother lamenting the stolen joy of becoming a grandmother and shopping for her first grandchild.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Milwaukee police took a 27-year-old man into custody in connection with the incident and recovered a firearm. Family members identified the suspect as Kuvina's boyfriend, the man with whom she lived and who was the father of her unborn child. As of the latest reports, charges against the suspect were pending review by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.
