Hunter Nachreiner, a 21-year-old Caucasian male, was a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee majoring in Psychology with aspirations of earning a master's degree. He was also interning as a behavior technician, working with children with autism. Friends and family remember him as a sweet and kind person with a smile that could light up a room.
He enjoyed skateboarding and spending time with his family, girlfriend, and friends.
On the evening of Monday, May 27, 2024, in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood, Nachreiner was in a car near Humboldt and Center when he sustained a fatal gunshot wound shortly before 8:30 p.m. A witness described a chaotic scene in which a group of people pulled Nachreiner from the vehicle and attempted to save his life. Despite these efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to some reports, the shooting was accidental. A 21-year-old male passenger was reportedly handling a gun when it unintentionally discharged, striking Nachreiner. Milwaukee police took a 21-year-old man into custody in connection with the shooting. Charges against the suspect are being referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office for review. At this time, no charges have been filed.
