In the early morning hours of the Fourth of July, 2024, the community of Columbus, Wisconsin, was rocked by a sudden act of violence that claimed the life of a well-known local business owner. Jose De Jesus Fuentes Hernandez, a 42-year-old Hispanic male, was fatally shot near his downtown establishment, Tequilas Bar and Grill. The incident unfolded around 1:31 a.m. when police, initially investigating what sounded like fireworks, discovered Fuentes Hernandez suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts and transport to Prairie Ridge Health, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a tragic sequence of events that began with a brief altercation at a bar between Fuentes Hernandez and 22-year-old Jonathan Javier Luna. Authorities believe that following the dispute, Luna returned to his residence to retrieve a firearm. He then allegedly waited for Fuentes Hernandez to exit the bar and shot him before fleeing the scene. The public played a critical role in the swift progression of the case, providing video footage that was instrumental in identifying Luna as the suspect.
Following the identification, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Luna's Columbus home, where they recovered some items of evidence, though Luna was not present. The search for the suspect extended to Madison, Wisconsin, where authorities located and apprehended him at a hotel on the afternoon of July 4th. The firearm believed to have been used in the homicide was later recovered along the path Luna took to flee the scene. Jonathan Javier Luna was taken into custody and is currently facing a charge of first-degree intentional homicide. During his initial court appearance, a judge set his bond at $10 million. The death of Fuentes Hernandez, described as a devoted father and a friend to many, has left a significant void in the Columbus community.
