In the late hours of a summer Tuesday in Milwaukee, the life of 20-year-old Jesus Huerta-Correa, a Hispanic male known to many as "Chuy," was brought to a violent and sudden end. On July 23, 2024, in an alley in the 1400 block of S. 23rd Street, a place familiar to the Southside community, the vibrant young entrepreneur was shot multiple times. Police responded to reports of gunfire around 11:00 p.m. and found Huerta-Correa grievously wounded.
Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Huerta-Correa was a well-known figure in his community, not for trouble, but for his business acumen and passion for fashion. He was the owner of GrailzMKE LLC, a venture through which he sold sneakers and clothing, building a reputation as a dedicated and caring individual. Friends and family remembered him as a humble and caring person who always put others before himself. His death, which police quickly determined was the result of an attempted armed robbery, sent ripples of grief and outrage through the community, highlighting concerns over gun violence and the risks faced by young entrepreneurs.
The investigation into the homicide led to the arrest of a suspect. Julian D. Broden, 17, was taken into custody and charged in connection with the fatal shooting. On August 3, Broden was charged with one felony count of first-degree reckless homicide with the use of a dangerous weapon and as a party to a crime, along with two felony counts for possessing a firearm after being adjudicated delinquent of a felony. Authorities alleged that the motive for the deadly encounter was a pair of sneakers. During a preliminary hearing, a public defender was assigned to Broden, and his bail was set at $150,000.
