In Oklahoma City on the evening of May 1, 2023, a heated argument escalated into a fatal encounter that ended the life of 57-year-old Lawson Gratts Jr. A Black male, Lawson was a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, known for his warm personality and infectious sense of humor that endeared him to all who knew him. Originally from Kansas City, he had built a life in Oklahoma City and was a talented chef.
On that Monday night, police were called to a residence in the 8000 block of
NW 72nd Street following a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Lawson Gratts Jr. deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Treveon Grant, was still present at the scene and was taken into custody by the authorities.
Investigators learned that Gratts was in a relationship with Treveon Grant's mother. An argument between the couple had erupted and turned into a physical altercation. In the midst of the struggle, Treveon Grant retrieved a handgun and shot Gratts. Grant was subsequently arrested and booked into the Oklahoma County Jail on a complaint of second-degree murder.
