In the winter of 2023, the life of 51-year-old Stephanie Lain Fender Loftin, a woman known for her vibrant personality and deep love for her family, came to a tragic and violent end. On the night of December 3rd, into the early morning of December 4th, Stephanie was shot and killed in southern Love County, Oklahoma. Her body was later discovered buried in a clandestine grave in the western part of the same county, a grim end to a life that had been filled with a passion for cooking, rock music, and the joy of raising her two sons.

The search for Stephanie began after she was reported missing in Lamar County, Texas, on December 6, 2023. A significant clue in the investigation emerged on December 14th, when a rental vehicle registered in her name was found abandoned in Stephens County, Oklahoma. Through what authorities described as an extensive investigation with very little initial information, deputies from Stephens and Love County were able to piece together the events leading to her disappearance and death.

The investigation led authorities to identify her estranged boyfriend, Michael Gonzalez, as the primary suspect. It is believed that after the murder, Gonzalez fled to California in an attempt to evade capture. An arrest warrant was issued, and he was subsequently apprehended by the Los Angeles Police Department. Following his arrest, Gonzalez was extradited back to Oklahoma to face the consequences of his alleged actions. He was charged with first-degree murder in Love County, as well as unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in Stephens County. Investigators expressed their determination to see that the suspect would be held accountable for the crime.
