On the first day of the new year, a heated argument shattered the sense of fresh beginnings at a residence on SW New York Avenue in Lawton, Oklahoma. Inside, 46-year-old Levell Newton, a Black/African American male, was with others when a man named Willie Lindley, aged 59, returned to the house in an agitated state. Lindley, who had been there earlier, was now armed and vehemently accused the people present of stealing his wallet and money.
His anger escalated as he threatened violence
if his belongings were not promptly returned. In the midst of this tense confrontation, the sound of a gunshot echoed through the home. When Lawton Police Department officers arrived at the scene around 4:30 p.m., responding to a call to assist the fire department with an unresponsive male, they found Levell Newton with a fatal gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, marking the first homicide in Lawton for the year 2024.
The investigation swiftly pointed towards Willie Lindley as the primary suspect. Witnesses at the residence recounted the events that transpired, leading to a warrant being issued for Lindley's arrest on a charge of first-degree murder. The search for Lindley was aided by a crucial tip from a Crime Stoppers informant, which directed law enforcement to another residence in Lawton. There, Willie Lindley surrendered to the authorities without incident. Following an interview with detectives, he was formally arrested and booked into the Lawton City Jail to face the murder charge. A memorial service to honor the life of Levell Newton was held over a week later at Another Chance Ministries in Lawton.
