In the quiet hours of Easter Sunday morning in Lawton, Oklahoma, the life of 19-year-old Clayton Stephens was tragically cut short. A white cisgender gay male, Stephens was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound to his face on April 9, 2023. His friends last saw him on the preceding Saturday evening when he departed from their home with the intention of a swift return. He was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, and had moved to Lawton to reside with his grandparents and finish high school.
Known for being particularly close to his grandmother, he made a point to connect with her daily. Those who knew him described him as a typical teenager who found joy in his work, cooking, music, and movies. Shortly before his death, he had moved in with a friend.
The investigation into Stephens' death quickly identified a suspect, 24-year-old Tawann Richardson. Police uncovered that Stephens and Richardson were involved in a secret intimate relationship. This information came to light through the course of the investigation, which was aided by video surveillance from Stephens' home. The footage showed Richardson picking Stephens up in a Chrysler Pacifica in the early hours of that Sunday morning. The vehicle was later located in Vernon, Texas, where a search revealed the presence of blood both inside and outside the car.
Following the discovery of this evidence, Tawann Richardson was arrested for the murder of Clayton Stephens. In a subsequent court appearance in January 2024, Richardson pleaded guilty to the murder charge. As a result of his plea, he was sentenced to serve the rest of his life in prison for the death of Clayton Stephens.
