In the early hours of a Monday morning in Oklahoma City, tragedy struck a gathering of young people. On July 15, 2024, at approximately 1:41 AM, police were called to a residence in the 700 block of NW 118th Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered 13-year-old A'moni Young, a Black female, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency services transported her to OU Medical Center, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
The incident marked the 46th homicide in Oklahoma City for the year 2024.
Initial investigations revealed that A'moni did not reside at the home where the shooting occurred, though adults were present at the time. Several individuals fled the scene after the gunshot, prompting a search of the area by law enforcement, including K-9 units and air support. While the exact circumstances leading to the shooting were initially unclear, the investigation soon pointed toward the mishandling of a loaded firearm. A'moni was reportedly at a sleepover with a friend at what was believed to be a safe location, but she ended up at a different house where the fatal incident took place.
In the wake of the shooting, a 15-year-old male, Albert Carbajal, who was with A’moni at the time of the incident, was identified as the suspect. He was subsequently arrested and booked into the Juvenile Detention Center on a complaint of Murder in the Second Degree. Due to the suspect's age, further details and court documents have been sealed. The investigation continues as authorities work to piece together the events that led to the untimely death of the young teenager who had her whole life ahead of her. Her family remembers her as a goofy and bright young lady who loved to draw and take pictures, with aspirations of studying photography in college.
