On a Thursday morning in January, a dispute over property in Richland, Washington, escalated into violence that claimed the life of 51-year-old Jarrod Yockey. The male victim was found deceased inside a residence on McMurray Avenue on January 26, 2023. Two other individuals, a man and a woman, were also wounded by gunfire during the altercation but managed to flee the house and seek help from a passerby.
The events leading to the fatal shooting reportedly began when Yockey, accompanied by Dustin P. Nelson and another woman, went to the McMurray Avenue home to retrieve property that had allegedly been stolen from the woman. Inside the house were the homeowner's son, Michael T. Reep, and his girlfriend, Lara Maria Garcia. Accounts of what transpired differ, but a physical altercation broke out between Yockey and the homeowner's son.
During the fight, gunshots were fired. Nelson later told investigators he saw Garcia loading a pistol before she allegedly began shooting, wounding both him and the 25-year-old woman. Yockey was fatally shot during the chaos. The homeowner's son was not considered a suspect in the shooting.
Following the incident, Lara Maria Garcia, 29, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree assault. Her bail was set at $750,000. Michael T. Reep, 28, who was seen holding a gun after Yockey was shot, fled the scene. He was later charged with illegally possessing a firearm and was apprehended in Las Vegas about two weeks after the shooting. While both Garcia and Reep were implicated in the events of that day, neither was immediately charged with Yockey's murder. The investigation into the complicated series of events continued.
