On a day that began like any other, Justin Ryan Krumbah, a 38-year-old Caucasian male, was diligently working as an Instacart shopper inside a Richland, Washington, Fred Meyer store on February 7, 2022. Known for his positive attitude and strong work ethic, he was going about his task of selecting items for a customer, a job he had come to enjoy. His path tragically crossed with that of another man in one of the store's aisles, leading to a brief and seemingly innocuous conversation. Moments later, the mundane sounds of a grocery store were shattered by the crack of gunfire.
Krumbah was shot multiple times and succumbed to his injuries at the scene before he could be transported to a hospital. The assailant then walked towards the front of the store, where he shot a store employee, Mark Hill, at the customer service desk. Hill was critically injured in the attack. The sudden violence plunged the store into chaos and left the community in shock. Friends and customers remembered Krumbah as a kind and outgoing person who always had a smile on his face and took pride in his work.
In the hours that followed the shooting, law enforcement identified a suspect, Aaron C. Kelly, then 39, and a manhunt ensued.
