In the winter of 2023, the life of 17-year-old Tyler Rowell, a White/Caucasian male, was tragically cut short in Spokane, Washington. On the evening of February 8th, what was supposed to be a straightforward transaction turned into a fatal encounter. Rowell, along with two friends, had arranged to sell cannabis oil to a buyer they had connected with online.
They drove to the agreed-upon location in the East Central neighborhood, unaware that the meeting was a setup for a robbery.
Upon their arrival, as they exited their vehicle, they were ambushed by individuals in ski masks. In the ensuing chaos, gunfire erupted. Rowell was struck by bullets and died at the scene from gunshot wounds to his head and torso. His two companions were also injured in the attack but survived. The assailants then stole the keys to their minivan and fled. The incident, which police later described as a "drug deal gone wrong," was reportedly orchestrated because one of the suspects needed money to pay a bail bondsman.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of four individuals: Leland Westerland, who was 16 at the time, Hagen F. Charbonneau, Gavin M. McGregor, and Sapphire B. Jespersen. Authorities identified Westerland as the sole shooter. He was charged as an adult and ultimately pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and two counts of assault. For his role in the death of Tyler Rowell and the wounding of his friends, Westerland was sentenced to 32 years in prison. The remaining three suspects are awaiting trial for their alleged involvement in the robbery and murder. Friends and family remembered Rowell as a kind and funny person who was always there for others and was looking forward to his future.
