In the early morning hours of October 12, 2024, a fatal encounter unfolded in the parking lot of a Safeway grocery store in Spokane Valley, Washington, leaving 53-year-old William McCreight, a Caucasian male, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The incident, which was later deemed a homicide by the Spokane County Medical Examiner, initially appeared to be a straightforward drug deal gone wrong.
Deputies and firefighters responded to reports of gunshots around 6:15 a.m.
and found McCreight on the ground. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators learned that McCreight had arranged to meet with 43-year-old Johnathan M. Bryman in the parking lot for what they believed was a possible drug transaction. At some point during their meeting, Bryman drew a handgun and shot McCreight before fleeing in his vehicle.
An intensive investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies led to Bryman's arrest two days later, on October 14, 2024, at a residence in Hayden, Idaho. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with second-degree murder, with bail set at $1 million. Bryman, a convicted felon, was found with two firearms at the time of his arrest. He was subsequently extradited to Spokane County to face the charges.
However, the case took a dramatic turn when new evidence emerged from McCreight's cellphone. Text messages revealed that McCreight had been attempting to recruit others to help him rob Bryman. It was also discovered that McCreight was armed with a realistic-looking silver BB gun and a makeshift knife strapped to his wrist at the time of the shooting. In light of this new information, the Spokane County Prosecutor's Office dropped the second-degree murder charge against Bryman, concluding that he had acted in self-defense. Bryman did, however, plead guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm.
