In the spring of 2023, the life of a Black/African American teenager from Tacoma, Washington, was tragically cut short. Sixteen-year-old Isaiah Mullens Jr., a male known to his loved ones as "Zay," was fatally shot on the evening of April 5th. The incident took place at the Monterra Apartments on 112th Street East in Parkland, a community just south of Tacoma.
Remembered by his uncle as a gentle and sweet kid who loved his family deeply and stood up for what he believed in, Isaiah had just turned 16 the month prior to his death.
On that Wednesday evening, deputies from the Pierce County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to the apartment complex following a 911 call reporting a shooting. Upon arrival, they found Isaiah Mullens Jr. with a gunshot wound to his chest. Despite their efforts to resuscitate him before emergency medical personnel arrived, and his subsequent transport to a local hospital, Isaiah succumbed to his injury. The Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed his cause of death as a gunshot wound to the chest and officially ruled it a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that the violence erupted following an altercation in the parking lot of the apartment complex involving several males. In the chaos, another individual, a 20-year-old man, was also shot. He managed to drive himself to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. The exact number of people involved in the dispute and the events that led to the gunfire remained unclear in the initial stages of the investigation.
In the days following the shooting, the Pierce County Sheriff's Department actively investigated the homicide. However, as of April 12, 2023, no arrests had been made in connection with the death of Isaiah Mullens Jr., and authorities had not publicly identified any suspects. Detectives continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the altercation and the subsequent shooting, appealing to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case. The loss of the young man marked the 15th homicide in Pierce County that year and the sixth victim under the age of 18, leaving a family and a community to mourn a life taken too soon.
