Jesus Alexandro Contreras-Chacon, a 20-year-old resident of Yakima, Washington, tragically lost his life on June 10, 2023, in Benton City, Washington. The incident occurred during a graduation party where a gunman opened fire into a crowded garage.
Contreras-Chacon was one of six people shot at the party. He was immediately taken to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The shooting took place on a Saturday night and sent shockwaves through the community. A visitation for Jesus was held on Friday, June 23, 2023, in Yakima.
In the months following the shooting, law enforcement made significant progress in the case. On November 1, 2023, two suspects were arrested in connection with the shooting. The Benton County Sheriff's Office reported that the suspects were believed to be gang members who had targeted the graduation party.
The investigation culminated in murder charges being filed against one of the suspects. On November 16, 2023, 20-year-old Elijah Mykale Cruz of Kennewick was charged with First Degree Murder. Cruz pleaded not guilty to the charges in Benton County Superior Court. At the time of his arraignment, Cruz was already in custody for unrelated charges.
