In the spring of 2025, the quiet community of Spokane Valley, Washington, was unsettled by the discovery of a local man's untimely death. Steven Elrod, a 65-year-old male, was found deceased on May 6th inside his 1988 Winnebago motorhome, which was parked in the lot of a fast-food restaurant on East Broadway Avenue. The initial call to authorities was for a suspicious circumstance, as a manager of the establishment had become concerned after the RV had been parked there for some time with no
signs of activity.
Upon their arrival, deputies were unable to get a response from inside the vehicle. A tow truck was called to remove the motorhome, and it was the tow truck driver who made the grim discovery. After knocking and receiving no answer, he opened the door to find Mr. Elrod's body just inside the doorway, and he immediately contacted 911. Investigators from the Spokane Valley Police Department were called to the scene and quickly determined that the death was not from natural causes. The case was officially classified as a homicide.
Further investigation by the Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office would later confirm that Steven Elrod died from a gunshot wound to the chest. Detectives processing the scene at the parking lot found evidence suggesting that the fatal shots may have been fired from outside the motorhome. A broken window and damage to the side of the RV appeared to be from bullets, and a shell casing was recovered from the grass nearby. Surveillance footage from the area showed the motorhome pulling into the parking lot in the early morning hours of the day before Mr. Elrod was found.
As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Steven Elrod, and authorities have not released any information about a potential suspect or suspects. Major Crimes Detectives are continuing to piece together the events that led to his death.
