In the early evening of June 15, 2023, Miles Russell Clark, a 30-year-old White/Caucasian male, was seated at a picnic table in Morrill Meadows Park in Kent, Washington, working on his company laptop. A tech support specialist for a Seattle software company, Clark had recently purchased a home in Kent. As he worked, a young man reportedly ran up to him and attempted to snatch the handgun that was in a holster on Clark's hip. When Clark resisted, a struggle ensued, and he was shot in the head. The assailant then took Clark's handgun and fled the scene.
Officers were dispatched to the park, located behind the Kent YMCA, at approximately 6:37 p.m. following a 911 call about the shooting. They found Clark with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head and immediately began CPR until medics arrived. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Miles Clark succumbed to his injuries the following day, on June 16, 2023. His death was officially ruled a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the head.
The investigation into the shooting led Kent Police detectives to identify a suspect. About a month after the incident, Elijah A. Cain, 19 years old at the time, was arrested. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and theft of a firearm. According to court documents, Cain allegedly told detectives that his intention was to steal Clark's gun and sell it online for money. Following his arrest, bail was set at $2 million, which Cain's family posted, leading to his release on electronic home detention as he awaits trial. Cain, a 2023 graduate of Kentridge High School where he was an all-league basketball player, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
