In the early morning hours of Halloween 2023, a tragedy unfolded in the industrial area of Tacoma, Washington, forever altering the lives of one family. Victor McVea III, a 40-year-old Black / African American man, was found unresponsive in the 1900 block of Milwaukee Way. The initial call to authorities came in just after 6:00 AM, reporting an individual in need of assistance.
Upon their arrival, Tacoma Police officers discovered McVea with what appeared to be a life-threatening gunshot
wound. Despite immediate life-saving measures initiated by the officers, their efforts were in vain. The Tacoma Fire Department arrived shortly after and pronounced him deceased at the scene. The incident marked the 25th homicide in the city that year.
The location of the shooting was outside the Tacoma Residential Reentry Center, a facility that helps formerly incarcerated individuals transition back into the community. Investigators focused their attention on a car at the scene which had sustained several bullet holes, suggesting a violent confrontation. Detectives began the arduous process of piecing together the events that led to McVea's death, working to understand what brought him to that specific location in the early hours of the morning.
As of the initial reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting. The Tacoma Police Department has since been investigating the case as a homicide. Authorities have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the identification and apprehension of any suspect or suspects involved in the death of Victor McVea III. They specifically requested that anyone with security cameras in the industrial area, or who may have witnessed any unusual activity, come forward, emphasizing that even a seemingly insignificant detail could be the crucial piece of evidence needed to bring closure to his family.
