A quiet Sunday in the Orchards neighborhood of Vancouver, Washington, was shattered on December 3, 2023, by a tragic event that claimed the lives of five family members, including 57-year-old Ronald E. Rouse. The White male was found deceased inside a home on Northeast 92nd Street in what authorities have described as an apparent murder-suicide. The Clark County Sheriff's Office was called to the residence for a welfare check after a relative received a disturbing text message from a family
member inside, stating they had harmed others.
Upon arrival, law enforcement was unable to make contact with anyone inside the house. After several hours, a SWAT team was called to the scene. A drone was deployed into the home, revealing the grim reality of multiple deceased individuals. Investigators later determined that Stuart K. Rouse, 64, had shot and killed his wife, Cristina S. Rouse, 62; his two adult daughters, Kristina T. Rouse, 33, and Melissa A. Rouse, 19; and his brother, Ronald E. Rouse. After killing his family members, Stuart Rouse then turned the gun on himself.
The motive behind the devastating act has not been publicly detailed, though it was reported that Stuart Rouse was a Navy veteran who may have been suffering from undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder. The family had also experienced a previous tragedy with the suicide of another son two years prior. Neighbors described the Rouses as a "typical, normal family," expressing shock at the sudden violence. The Clark County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the apparent shooter had no prior criminal history, and there were no previous calls to the residence. As the perpetrator died at the scene, there have been no arrests in connection with the deaths.
